With the pending debate in the U.S. Senate on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research and with many states attempting to provide state level funding it is important that individuals are well informed on this important issue.

The Summer 2001 issue of The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly was titled "Respect for the Human Embryo" and was distributed to selected members of the House of Representatives and all members of the U.S. Senate in advance of their debate, and subsequent ban, on human reproductive cloning. The current (Spring 2006) issue of The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly Verbatim section has reprinted an article by John B. Shea, M.D. titled "Catholic Teaching on the Human Embryo as an Object of Research." The article originally appeared in the October 2005 issue of Catholic Insight and may be read from the current issue of the NCBQ.

The Pontifical Academy for Life published a declaration titled The Production and The Scientific and Therapeutic Use Of Human Embryonic Stem Cells in August of 2000.
